Asynchronous motor plays a vital role in modern industry and daily life. It is widely used in various fields for its advantages of simple structure, reliable operation and low cost. And asynchronous motors can be divided into many types according to different characteristics and standards.
A、Classification according to the number of phases
1. Single-phase asynchronous motor
(1) What is a single-phase asynchronous motor:
A single-phase asynchronous motor is an asynchronous motor powered by a single-phase AC power supply. It usually consists of stator, rotor, end cover, bearings and other parts. A single-phase winding is arranged in the stator, and when a single-phase sinusoidal current passes through the stator winding, an alternating magnetic field is generated. Since the strength and direction of this magnetic field changes sinusoidally from time to time, a pulsating magnetic field is generated in the air gap of the motor.
(2) Application of single-phase asynchronous motor: widely used in household appliances, power tools, medical equipment and other fields.
(3) Advantages and disadvantages of single-phase asynchronous motor:
a.Advantages of single-phase asynchronous motor:
Simple structure: relatively low manufacturing and maintenance costs, fewer parts.
Wide range of application: can meet the power needs of many small household appliances and low-power equipment.
Inexpensive: low cost, with high cost performance.
Easy to move and carry: suitable for some portable equipment.
b.Disadvantages of single-phase asynchronous motors:
Poor starting performance: special starting devices or methods are generally required to assist starting.
Relatively low efficiency: compared with three-phase asynchronous motor, its energy conversion efficiency is slightly lower under the same power.
Low power factor: higher reactive power demand on the grid, which may affect the quality of power supply from the grid.
Poor speed regulation performance: it is relatively difficult to realize speed regulation and the range of speed regulation is narrow.
2. Three-phase asynchronous motors
(1) What is a three-phase asynchronous motor:
A three-phase asynchronous motor is an induction motor consisting of a stator and a rotor. When the stator winding is energized with three-phase alternating current, a rotating magnetic field is generated. The rotating magnetic field cuts the rotor conductor, generating an induced electromotive force and an induced current in the rotor conductor. The rotor current interacts with the rotating magnetic field to produce an electromagnetic torque, which turns the motor rotor. (To learn more about three-phase asynchronous motors click here)
(2) Application of three-phase asynchronous motor: it is widely used in industrial production, such as machine tools, water pumps, cranes and so on. The three-phase power supply makes it run more smoothly and has a larger power range.
(3) Advantages and disadvantages of three-phase asynchronous motor
a. Advantages of three-phase asynchronous motor:
Good running performance: compared with single-phase asynchronous motor, its performance is better.
Higher energy conversion efficiency: it can effectively save electricity in industrial production.
Simple structure: composed of stator and rotor, with relatively few parts.
Robust and durable: with high reliability and stability, it can run for a long time.
Relatively inexpensive: low manufacturing cost, has a high cost-effective.
Strong overload capacity: able to withstand overload situations to a certain extent.
Easy to use, install and maintain: simple operation, no need for complex technology and special maintenance requirements.
b. Disadvantages of three-phase asynchronous motors: speed regulation difficulties.

B、 according to the protection form classification
1. Open type asynchronous motor
Open type asynchronous motor is a form of motor structure. It is characterized by the stator and rotor of the motor and the winding and other components are completely exposed to the external environment, which is well ventilated and has a better heat dissipation effect. However, the protection performance of this structure is poor, and it is easy to be invaded by dust, moisture, foreign objects, etc. It is usually suitable for clean, dry, non-corrosive gas environment.
Due to the limitation of protection performance, the open type asynchronous motor is less suitable in some occasions with high protection requirements, but its good heat dissipation performance makes it still have certain advantages in some specific industrial applications.
2. Protected asynchronous motors
Protected asynchronous motors are a type of motor with an enclosure with a protective structure that prevents solid foreign objects larger than 12 millimeters in diameter and water droplets within 60 degrees of the vertical direction from entering the motor.
This type of motor ensures a certain degree of protection while still providing good ventilation and heat dissipation. Protected asynchronous motors are suitable for applications where there is a certain degree of dust, splashing liquid, etc. in the operating environment, but it is not like working under harsh conditions. It is widely used in industrial production, machinery manufacturing and many other fields.
3. Enclosed asynchronous motor
Enclosed asynchronous motor is a kind of motor with high protection level. Its shell is tightly constructed to prevent dust, water droplets and other foreign matter from entering the motor. These motors usually have sealed shaft extensions and junction boxes, as well as a good airtight design, making the inside of the motor almost completely isolated from the outside environment.
The advantage of enclosed asynchronous motors is that they are highly protective and can operate stably in harsh, dusty, humid and even corrosive gas environments. However, due to their hermetically sealed structure, the heat dissipation conditions are relatively poor and may require more effective cooling measures, such as the addition of fans or the use of special cooling media.
Enclosed asynchronous motors are widely used in mining, chemical industry, metallurgy and other industrial fields with relatively harsh environments.
4. Explosion-proof asynchronous motor
Explosion-proof asynchronous motor is a special motor used in flammable and explosive environments. These motors are specially designed and processed in terms of structure and performance to prevent factors such as sparks, high temperatures or static electricity that may trigger the explosion of the surrounding explosive mixture during operation. Explosion-proof asynchronous motors are usually equipped with explosion-proof technology such as explosion-proof enclosure, safety-increasing type, positive-pressure type and non-sparking type. Their manufacture and inspection follow strict standards and specifications to ensure safe and reliable operation in hazardous environments.
Explosion-proof asynchronous motor is mainly used in petroleum, chemical industry, coal mine, natural gas and other places where explosive gas or dust exists.
C、Categorized by rotor structure
1. Cage-type asynchronous motor
Cage asynchronous motor is a common type of three-phase asynchronous motor.
Its rotor structure is like a squirrel cage, which consists of copper or aluminum strips embedded in the groove of the rotor core, and all the copper or aluminum strips are connected with end rings at both ends to form a closed circuit. When the stator winding is connected to the three-phase power supply to generate a rotating magnetic field, the rotating magnetic field cuts the rotor conductor, generating an induced current in the rotor conductor. The rotor conductor with current is subjected to electromagnetic force in the magnetic field, which causes the rotor to rotate following the rotating magnetic field.
Cage-type asynchronous motor has the advantages of simple structure, durability, low price, reliable operation, easy maintenance, etc. It is widely used in all kinds of industrial production machinery and household appliances.
2. Wire-wound asynchronous motor
Wire-wound asynchronous motor is a type of three-phase asynchronous motor. Its rotor winding is similar to the stator winding, which is also a three-phase winding, and is connected to an external resistor or other control device through slip rings and brushes. When the stator winding is energized with a three-phase alternating current to generate a rotating magnetic field, the rotating magnetic field cuts the rotor winding, generating an induced electromotive force and a current in the rotor winding, which produces an electromagnetic torque to turn the rotor.
The characteristic of wire-wound asynchronous motor is that the starting performance and speed regulation of the motor can be improved by connecting resistance in series in the rotor circuit. In starting, by connecting a larger resistance, the starting current can be reduced and the starting torque can be increased; in speed regulation, by changing the value of the resistance in the series, a certain range of smooth speed regulation can be realized.
However, wire-wound asynchronous motors are relatively complicated in structure due to slip rings and brushes, with higher maintenance costs and slightly lower operational reliability than cage-type asynchronous motors.
There are many other ways to categorize asynchronous motors, and each type has its own unique characteristics and applicable scenarios. Understanding the classification of asynchronous motors helps us to choose the right motor according to the specific needs in the actual application, so as to realize more efficient and reli
